The UK Must Consider Easing Up Restrictions on International Students

Peter Gale based in Godalming is a educational expert. A professional who has spent more than two decades in the educational system, he had taken on several roles during his stint in the field. He is skilled in strategic planning, data analysis, public policy, and change management. He has a wide experience in educational leadership and has also acted as an Ofsted inspector for Her Majesty. Below, he talks about how crucial higher education is to the UK’s economy.

Things aren’t looking too good for the UK, especially if one were to take note of the current ranking for preferred education destinations go. While it took quite some time for the people responsible to come up with a report discussing on how international students impact the country, Australia has already overtaken the country when it comes to international study destinations. Numbers show that the country has now fallen to the third spot from being second worldwide-+.

Rankings like these are significant especially if one were to consider the impact of Higher Education on the country’s economy. International students are often subject to rather high tuition fees when studying in the country. These are numbers that are then used to help support Britain’s world-class institutions as well as fund world-class research.

Intentional students coming into the country are known to contribute an estimated amount of £25 billion through indirect and direct spending. They are also known to help bolster the country’s soft power. This is the reason why the revelation that there seems to be an increase of about 22% in terms of visas that were granted for students that are among to qualify for long-term study in the country, it can be truly a cause for concern.

Considering the present post-Brexit environment, there is so much that can be achieved out of building Higher Education as a future export. The country should at least take the necessary efforts to reclaim its position as one of the top two most preferred destinations for interested international students. To achieve this, there is a need to get some long-term initiatives put in place in order to also bolster the number of students that the system is education.

In the past, post-study work visas used to make it possible for international students to remain in the country for two years to find work. Now, this has been slashed to a mere four months only. This was despite the consultation done in 2011 nationally where only a mere 6% of respondents agreed on this particular course of action

It is high time for the UK to commit to a growth target as far as education experts go. It should also measure how the country is doing against the statistics of competitor countries especially in categories that are likely to influence the attractiveness of the educational system to international students. Meanwhile, the immediate priority should be getting the restrictions relaxed on international students that are looking for employment. This way, they will be able to use their newly acquired skills earned from British universities towards the economic productivity and the economy of the country.
